Joseph A. Volpe, MD

Joseph A. Volpe, MD, is a board certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physician. He completed his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, followed by an internship in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Louisiana State University in New Orleans. At Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Dr. Volpe completed a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and was named Chief Resident. He went on to complete a Fellowship in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Hughston Sports Medical Foundation in Columbus, Georgia.
Dr. Volpe has a strong background in the field of sports medicine. He serves as the Medical Committee Co-Chair for the Lance Armstrong Foundation Ride for the Roses, Consulting Physiatrist for the Austin Ice Bats Central Hockey League, and Team Physician for Anderson High School in Austin. In the Dallas area, he administered pre-participation physicals and provided sports event medical coverage for schools, and served as Team Physician for Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia; Chattahoochee Valley Community College and Central High School in Phenix City, Alabama; and Frost High School Football Team in Frost, Texas. He also served as Associate Physician for the Columbus Cottonmouths Central Hockey League; the Columbus RedStixx, Single A Minor League Baseball; and the Dallas BURN, Major League Soccer. Additionally, Dr. Volpe has served on the medical staff for numerous sports tournaments throughout Dallas and the Southeastern U.S.
Dr. Volpe is the recipient of many honors and awards. From 1994 to 1995, he was the Contributing Editor for Rehab in Review, and was a Contributing Author for the Textbook of Running Medicine. His works have appeared in numerous medical journals including the Journal of Applied Physiology and Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. A renowned speaker, Dr. Volpe has been a presenter at such professional events as the Duke University Sports Medicine Annual Conference and the American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting. He received his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin.
