Dog helps save man paralyzed in biking accident

Dr. Juan Latorre, medical director of the Spinal Cord Injury and Amputee Program at St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital—along with his team of therapists—are helping Paul Horton recover after a biking accident that left him partially paralyzed due to a spinal injury. Horton's golden retriever, Yogi, also played a key role in saving Horton's life by alerting his neighbors. Horton has made impressive gains during his time at St. David's Rehabilitation Hospital. In just more than a month, he is able to do things that often take patients up to a year to accomplish.

Mind Games: Thousands could be cured after Alzheimer's diagnosis

Dr. Mark Burnett, executive medical director and neurosurgeon at NeuroTexas Institute at St. David's HealthCare, performs surgery to treat a condition known as normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). NPH is a treatable condition that can mimic Alzheimer's and dementia. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, NPH is an abnormal increase of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain's ventricles, or cavities, which puts pressure on the brain. NPH can occur in people of any age, but it is most common in the elderly population. During this procedure, doctors insert a programmable shunt, or tube, in the brain to drain the excess cerebrospinal fluid into the abdomen. The results can be dramatic.

This collaboration will expand innovative opportunities for scientists within the university and NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare, broaden the network of neuroscience researchers in Austin, and increase access to advanced medical therapies and surgical technologies for patients.

Jamie Schanbaum Beats the Odds

In November 2008, the life of 21-year-old University of Texas student Jamie Schanbaum changed drastically after she suffered complications due to meningitis. As a result of the complications, both of her legs and all 10 fingers were amputated.

With the help of prosthetics and the team at St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital, Jamie is regaining function. She is re-learning how to ride a bike and thanks to the St. David's Rehabilitation Adaptive Driving program, is able to drive again.

An Amazing Recovery

Stroke Prevention

In recognition of National Stroke Awareness Month (an in light of news that Vice President Joe Biden's son, Beau, had suffered a stroke at the age of 41), Dr. Ray Bogitch—an affiliate member of the NeuroTexas Institute at St. David's HealthCare—discusses the risk factors and symptoms of stroke, as well as who is at risk of having a stroke. An estimated 10 to 15 percent of strokes occur in those under the age of 45.

Stroke Awareness

Battle with Meningitis helps students avoid the same fate

Meningitis is an inflammation of the Meniges lining of the brain. Doctors say is it usually caused by an infection brought on by a virus or bacteria. It's especially dangerous and even life threatening if that infection spreads into the bloodstream. One UT student's battle with the illness is helping others avoid the same fate.

Luci Baines Johnson puts face on rare disease

60-year-old Larry Keith Stone was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome in December 2009, and was admitted to St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital in Georgetown later that month. Through comprehensive inpatient and outpatient physical therapy, Mr. Stone is back at work and continues to improve.

Fort Hood Soldier Wants to Give Back

A Fort Hood Soldier injured during combat wants to pursue a career in medicine.

Thomas Grycza toured Neuro Texas Institute at St.David’s Medical Center this afternoon. Grycza was injured during his tour in Iraq and is now a member of the Warrior Transit Group. The program is a combination of troops who are rehabilitating from injuries received during combat. Grycza became interested in medicine after his injuries and watching several of his comrades go through rehabilitation. He said, “Because there were some injuries sustained while I was deployed to Iraq, and I believe giving back what you’ve been given, I believe that’s a good thing.” The St. David’s staff gave Grycza an in-depth look at neurological injuries often sustained during combat. Grycza said hoped his tour of the facility would give him a better understanding of the brain.
