O-arm® Imaging System Will Enhance Precision, Excellence of Spine Care
At NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare

AUSTIN, Texas—NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare, renowned for its spine program, announced today that it has entered a new era in advanced patient care with the addition of the O-arm® Multidimensional Imaging System, which will be used to treat patients with spine conditions that require surgery.

The O-arm Imaging System, manufactured by Medtronic, provides complete multi-dimensional, intra-operative surgical imaging. It provides surgeons with real-time, 3D images, as well as multi-plane, 2D and fluoroscopic imaging. Using these images, neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons at NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare can view the patient anatomy in the operative position, monitor the status of the surgery and verify the surgical changes with a 3D volumetric image prior to the patient leaving the surgical suite. As a result, patients undergoing spinal procedures may experience less invasive surgeries, faster recovery times and improved outcomes.

“The O-arm Imaging System allows us, as surgeons, to make more precise medical decisions while the patient is on the operating table,” Douglas J. Fox, M.D., neurosurgeon and executive medical director of NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare, said. “Because this technology offers such great precision, it has the potential to eliminate the need for revision procedures.”

The O-arm Imaging System uses a flat-screen detector that enables it to collect 2D or 3D volumetric imaging within seconds. It is designed specifically for use by surgeons in standard operating rooms while yielding high-quality imaging comparable to fixed CT systems.

The O-arm Imaging System features the design flexibility to allow for expansion to additional surgical applications. It received FDA clearance in early 2006.
