Back Surgery: “Feeling Younger Again”
Jack Ryle never realized how hard it could be to lift a coffee cup until he couldn’t do it. But by early winter 2008, his arm pain and loss of hand strength prevented him from gripping even the smallest household items.

“For about six or eight months, I had pain in my left arm and diminishment of strength in my left hand, in terms of grip,” Jack explains. “Even putting on my shoes and tying them was difficult.”

Two individuals – Jack’s daughter, who is a hospital administrator, and a physician who had done previous back surgery on Jack – referred him to neurosurgeon Mark Burnett, MD.

“Dr. Burnett inserted a sliver of bone in place of the disc that was herniated,” Jack explains. “The bone was secured with two screws and that was it. I went in to St. David’s Hospital the morning of surgery and left the next day. I couldn’t have had better care than what I had at St. David’s.”

Soon after surgery, Jack noticed significant improvement. But despite feeling better, he followed Dr. Burnett’s instructions and refrained from exercising for six weeks.   Today, Jack is back to his regular workout regime at St. David’s Health & Fitness Center. His two-hour program incorporates the treadmill, stationary bike and weight machines.

“Exercise makes me feel good,” he says. When he is not exercising, Jack can be found volunteering for St. David’s Medical Center, a position he has held since 2007.  Looking back at his surgery in March of 2008, Jack beams with happiness when he talks about NeuroTexas. He praises Dr. Burnett’s friendly demeanor and emphatically states that he would refer Dr. Burnett to anyone needing the services of a neurosurgeon.
