Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD)

Condition in which there is repetitive jerking of the limbs during sleep. This condition, unlike RLS only occurs at night. The jerking movements occur every 20-40 seconds. Approximately 80% of individuals who have RLS also have PLMD. There is primary PLMD which is believed to be a result of an underlying nerve disorder, and there is secondary PLMD, which is linked to other causes like diabetes mellitus, iron deficiency, anemia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and medication-related effects.

Overview of PLMD:

Symptoms:

Disrupted sleep, EDS, reports from bed partner of limb movements.

Diagnosis:

A careful history and physical exam as well as blood tests to rule out treatable causes.

Treatment:

Medications are available to eliminate symptoms associated with PLMD. Examples of medications used include benzodiazepines, dopaminergics, anticonvulsants, and GABA agonists.
