Epidermoid Cyst

An epidermoid cyst is a relatively uncommon, benign tumor that accounts for approximately 1% of all primary brain tumors. This type of tumor develops from epithelial (skin) cells and is most commonly found between the brainstem and the cerebellum (CP angle). The contents of the tumor often contain keratin (a protein), cellular debris, cholesterol, and occasional hair. These tumors are congenital (present at birth) but generally do not present with symptoms until later in life.

Symptoms

Symptoms associated with epidermoid cysts vary depending on location, but may include:
  • Headache
  • Double vision
  • Weakness
  • Imbalance
  • Visual loss
  • Seizures
  • Trigeminal neuralgia
  • Recurrent episodes of meningitis caused by rupture of the cyst

Who do epidermoid cysts usually affect?

As mentioned above, these particular tumors are present at birth; however, individuals are usually asymptomatic until ages 20 to 40.

How is an epidermoid cyst diagnosed?

How is an epidermoid cyst treated?

Surgical removal – Large epidermoid cysts causing symptoms are treated by complete surgical removal. Since the tumor is benign, chemotherapy and radiation are not indicated.
